A soft Escape to Thessaloniki

HOTEL: Kassandra Palace Seaside Resort

Intent

Fly and flop.

I wanted sun, warmth, and a place where the days didn’t demand anything from me. A gentle family break with no itinerary, no pressure, just ease. The kind of reset that comes from doing very little, very slowly.

Intent Met?

Met — ish.

The stillness, the sea, the slow days… all exactly what I needed.

But the hotel had enough rough edges to keep it from being the seamless escape I’d imagined.

It was advertised as 5* but it certainly wasn’t!

The Escape

Arrival & First Impressions

We landed just after midday, the airport (Thessaloniki) was very busy and it took us around 90mins to get through passport control – not quite the start we hoped for. The transfer was quick, and for a moment I thought, Yes, this is exactly the pace I need.

Check‑in was polite but slow. Not rude, not chaotic…..just not five‑star polished.

BUT…. the sea was visible from the entrance, turquoise and calm, and that softened everything.

The Place

The hotel sat on a quiet stretch of coastline — not pristine, but peaceful in the way that matters. The beach was the real beauty: warm, shallow, turquoise water with tiny fish darting around your ankles. Pebbly sand but still beautiful. The kind of sea that makes you forget everything else.

The room was spacious and functional, which helps when travelling with a child, but the details chipped away at the luxury label:

• Land‑view = car park + forest

• Shower leaked

• Toilet broke twice

• No robes on arrival

• Décor dated

• Bed genuinely lovely — the one thing that felt premium

The balcony wasn’t the highlight here — the pool and beach were.

The pool area was lively but not chaotic.

Balinese beds, plenty of loungers (no 7am towel wars), and an Olympic‑sized pool that somehow stayed calm even when busy.

Families, couples, solo travellers — a mix that made it easy to blend in.

The Experience

Breakfast was the highlight: fresh fruit, warm pastries, hot options, good coffee.

A generous, easy start to the day.

Dinner was more hit‑and‑miss — generous portions but not always memorable.

• Limited choice

• Long queues

• Food running out

• Slow to replenish

• Staff overwhelmed

Pretty restaurant, but the experience didn’t match the aesthetics.

Daily yoga was a sweet surprise — 30‑minute sessions late morning. One instructor was warm, grounded, intuitive. The other repeated the same sequence every time. It was a great start to the morning but if you’re a seasoned yogi you might find the classes a little boring.

Service overall was kind, though occasionally stretched. You could feel the staff doing their best with limited hands.

The Moments

The best part wasn’t the hotel — it was the rhythm we fell into.

Slow mornings.

Afternoons by the sea.

Evenings where the light turned everything gold.

The Practicalities

• Travel time: 3 hrs 45 mins from Birmingham

• Transfer: 50 minutes by coach

• Cost: £1,200 (flights, transfers, hotel + island tax)

• Best for: Families wanting ease + a beautiful pool/beach setup

• Not ideal for: Anyone expecting true five‑star rooms or seamless service

• Packing tip: Water shoes for little ones; the beach is pebbly.

The Truth

The hotel wasn’t perfect. A little worn, a little inconsistent but the energy of the place was soft. And sometimes that matters more than polished edges.

They do say you get what you pay for. I was hoping for true 5* luxury on a 3 star price but alas it wasn’t meant to be. Worth the money but certainly not 5*.

Would I Return?

Yes but not to this hotel.

I’d return to the area, but I’d choose somewhere that matches the promise.

The warmth, the ease, the slow days …..those I’d happily repeat.

The Intentional Takeaway

I didn’t get perfection, but I got peace and that was the escape I needed.
